PROCESS SELECTION GUIDE

Evaluate winding & stacking equipment

This guide helps prepare comparable requirements. It does not replace a model-specific supplier response or an agreed process trial.

Choose the forming route and define its interfaces

Start by identifying winding or stacking and the intended cell format. Describe the electrode and separator presentation and the required output from the forming operation. Some proposals include cutting or downstream handling while others do not. An integrated-system label must be unpacked into supplied operations so that unlike production scopes are not compared as equivalent machines.

Keep production rates attached to their counted event

For winding, retain electrode length, finished geometry and the conditions tied to pieces per minute. Maximum web speed is a separate figure. For stacking, ask whether the reported rate counts electrode actions, layers, stacks or completed cells. Head and station counts alone do not resolve that definition. An undefined PPM figure cannot be used as a finished-cell output rating.

Retain the meaning of each dimensional limit

Separate incoming roll diameter and core size from electrode dimensions and finished-cell width or height. Ask whether the intended combination of dimensions is supported. Independent maximum values do not automatically define a feasible operating combination. State material construction and format changes with the dimensional envelope so that the supplier can propose a concrete setup.

Agree on alignment, tension and inspection checks

Specify sample selection and the positions or features used to evaluate alignment. Ask what guiding and inspection functions are included and how their results are associated with each product. For winding, discuss tension under the proposed material and geometry. For integrated cutting and stacking, add tooling and reject handling. Catalogue tolerance labels need measurement conditions before they can support a comparison.

Questions that make a shortlist useful

Ask for the rate definition, a material-specific trial, the supplied tooling and inspection configuration and the changeover record. Identify upstream and downstream transfers and responsibility for integration. Keep the catalogue figure, the proposed operating point and your acceptance target in separate fields. A conditional shortlist with visible open items is more useful than a speed ranking without comparable conditions.

Examples on BatteryEquip and what each shows

Three prismatic winders publish output at the same 16 m electrode length, which makes them a useful comparison: the LEAD prismatic EV winder, the Han's SLE prismatic winder and the Hymson high-speed winder. Smaller formats appear in the WinAck SA270S sheet-fed winder and the Gelon three-station servo winder. For cylindrical cells, the Gelon integrated tab welding and winding machine and the QINTIAN laser cutting and winding machine combine tab work with winding.

Stacking routes differ more: the GREENSUN separator-bag stacker wraps cathodes in separator, the ZTH thermal lamination system bonds sheets before stacking, and the Kejing Z-fold stacker serves laboratory and pilot work. The winding throughput page explains how to compare any of these on the same cell definition.
