PLANNING THIS PROCESS

What to include in your slitting brief

Include incoming roll dimensions, finished strip widths and edge-quality requirements. Ask how tooling changes and dust extraction are handled.

PROCESS SELECTION GUIDE

Evaluate slitting equipment

This guide helps prepare comparable requirements. It does not replace a model-specific supplier response or an agreed process trial.

Identify the incoming electrode and finished strips

Describe the coated roll, its substrate and the required strip layout. Separate incoming web width from each finished strip width and identify the number and arrangement of strips. State the permitted handling condition and the output-roll requirements. The cutting station, dust collection and rewinding scope need explicit boundaries before two equipment proposals can be compared.

Attach edge quality to a measurement method

Ask how the intended edge is inspected and how samples are chosen. Define the project’s burr, particle or edge-defect criterion using an agreed measurement method rather than a vague claim of clean cutting. Do not import a tolerance from a different material or blade arrangement. Record the actual electrode and tooling used when reviewing a demonstration.

Compare tooling and changeover requirements

Identify the strip-width family and ask what tools, spacers or settings change between layouts. Request the changeover and verification sequence and the access needed for blade maintenance. Keep a steady-run speed separate from the time needed to prepare and validate another format. Check that your narrow-strip layouts and coating construction are within the quoted range, not just under the maximum width.

Check winding and material-transfer interfaces

Define incoming and outgoing roll geometry, tension requirements and the handling route to the next operation. Ask how each finished strip is rewound and identified and what collection or inspection equipment is supplied. Retain the accepted tooling, material and strip layout with the run record. Slitting throughput should be discussed together with the required edge and handling quality.

Questions to keep on the comparison sheet

Request the supported material and strip layouts, tooling scope, inspection method, utility needs and waste or particle collection arrangement. If strip width, tolerances or operating conditions are not published, ask the maker for them. This category contains planning guidance; it does not create a numerical specification for an unlisted or unreviewed slitting machine.

Examples on BatteryEquip and what each shows

Knife slitters cut the coated roll into strips: the TOB FT-500 for laboratory rolls, the Gelon 400 mm pilot slitter and the Gelon continuous tension-controlled slitter for longer runs, and the TOB SL650 for laminated film and separator. Laser processing is the alternative where tab shapes are cut into the foil edge, as in the Geesun laser tab-forming and slitting family; the Geesun laser cleaner removes coating from tab areas before welding.

Stacked cells need sheets rather than strips, which brings die cutting or laser cutting: compare the Yixinfeng integrated die-cutting and stacking system with the JIZHI all-laser cutting and stacking machine. Burrs and loose particles matter in every case, because a particle that bridges the separator can cause an internal short that only shows up later as self-discharge, a test explained on the cell measurement page. List each candidate's strip widths, tooling and edge results side by side, as the guide to comparing supplier responses suggests.
