Gelon integrated cylindrical tab welding and winding machine

Gelon's integrated machine for cylindrical cells detects and cuts the electrode, welds the tabs ultrasonically, applies protective tape and then winds electrode and separator into a core. It finishes with tape, cell stamping, a short-circuit test and rejection of bad cores. It suits cylindrical lines that want tab preparation and winding in one machine.

Steps before and after winding

The sequence begins with electrode detection and cutting, and tab length can be adjusted. Ultrasonic tab welding and protective tape come next, followed by automatic winding of electrode and separator. Finishing adhesive or tape goes on before transfer. Gelon also lists cell stamping, a short-circuit test and rejection of nonconforming parts. This makes it a different purchase from a winder that takes electrodes with tabs already fitted.

The page lists no model number, foil thickness, tab stack, cell diameter or length, welding force, frequency or winding rate. The photo shows the general machine; ask for the dimensions of the configuration you would receive. Specify your coated strip, the bare collector area, tab material and layer stack before asking whether the machine fits. The process uses welded tabs, so ask Gelon separately if you need a tabless design.

BUYER NOTES

The weld and the tape

The ultrasonic joint must suit your collector and tab stack. Ask for the tooling contact pattern, support, weld recipe and the test used to judge each joint. Pull strength and electrical resistance answer different questions, so agree both if your cell needs them. Gelon publishes no measured joint results.

Protective tape adds another dimension to control. Define its position against the welded tab, the overlap, adhesive compatibility and the room left inside the wound core. Ask how the machine spots missing or shifted tape and where that part goes. One benefit of a combined machine is tracing an upstream defect to the core it ends up in, so make that tracing part of the order.

BUYER NOTES

Judge it on finished cores

A good witnessed run starts with your electrode rolls and ends with labelled wound cores. Agree tension settings, start and finish positions, tab orientation and transfer handling, then check edge alignment and separator coverage. Gelon gives no tension range or alignment tolerance, so set them from your cell drawing and have Gelon meet them during acceptance.

The short-circuit test needs a stated voltage, threshold, contact method and response to a failed core. It screens for shorts; capacity, wetting and safety are tested later in the line. Specify how each result is linked to its core and how rejects are kept out of the next step. Stop and restart the machine to see whether strip position, tape placement or part identity is lost between stations.

Wound cores from this machine go on to case insertion and bottom welding, for example on the Gelon negative-tab bottom welder.
