PLANNING THIS PROCESS

What to include in your coating & drying brief

Specify electrode substrate, usable coating width and drying requirements. Request evidence for your intended coating process rather than relying on a headline speed.

PROCESS SELECTION GUIDE

Evaluate coating & drying equipment

This guide helps prepare comparable requirements. It does not replace a model-specific supplier response or an agreed process trial.

Define the coating station and drying boundary

Identify the incoming substrate and whether the target is continuous, intermittent or patterned coating. Ask what slurry delivery, unwinding, coating head, drying and rewinding are included. Single- and double-layer layouts require a clear configuration description. A line-speed figure without the quoted drying and material-handling scope is an incomplete basis for procurement.

Separate the width fields in the requirement

Use distinct fields for web width, usable coating width and roller-face width. Add the required edge allowance and finished electrode layout. Retain the supplier’s label and unit with each source value. The usable coated region is usually narrower than the roller or the incoming web. If a width is missing its unit, request clarification rather than assuming millimetres from another model.

Connect quality measurements to operating conditions

State whether coating load is expressed on a wet or dry basis and identify the measurement used to evaluate the electrode. Attach the intended material, pattern and drying arrangement to a proposed operating point. Ask how measurements are sampled across and along the web. Alignment tolerance and coat-weight consistency are different measures; ask for both at the speed you will run.

Prepare a representative coating demonstration

Agree on foil, slurry, sample quantities and the measurement record before a trial. Record the coating pattern, speed, drying configuration and sampling positions. Define which start-up, steady-run or format-change conditions need to be assessed. Confirm that the demonstration produces the intended coated electrode; moving web through the machine by itself is not equivalent to accepting coating quality.

Questions for a complete supplier response

Request usable width, incoming and outgoing roll dimensions, proposed drying scope, utilities and trial conditions. Ask which options are included and who supplies transfer interfaces. Keep open figures visible in the comparison. Shortlist only after the width meaning, quality basis and configuration are understood, then record any supplier exceptions against the same revision of the project brief.

Examples on BatteryEquip and what each shows

The Yinghe 1600 series is the clearest example of the width problem: a 1,600 mm roller face with a 1,350 mm maximum coating width. The Lyric double-layer wide coater quotes an 1,800 mm web width, a substrate limit. The JRS single-sided extrusion coater states openly that its top speed depends on the slurry and the oven length, which is true of every coater.

For production comparisons, the Katop single-layer extrusion coater and the Jiement double-sided coater represent single-layer and two-sided layouts. For laboratory work, the AOT vertical intermittent coater, the TOB JYCM-800 sheet coater and the ACEY three-roll transfer coater show smaller formats, and the Gelon steam-oven coating line shows a pilot line with its own drying. The guide to comparing supplier responses explains how to keep these figures in separate columns.
