Courage 8000A-family cylindrical PACK resistance welders

Courage builds two transistor-supply spot welders for cylindrical PACK connections: the single-sided KRZD-8000A and the double-sided KRZS-8000A. Both list 18650, 26650 and 32650 cells. They differ in nickel strip thickness, polarity switching, travel and rate, so the choice depends on your joint and electrode access.

Strip limits and travel for each configuration

Both models list 18650, 26650 and 32650 cells. The KRZD-8000A takes 0.12–0.3 mm nickel-plated steel for flat welding and 0.2–0.25 mm nickel-plated steel or pure nickel for projection welding. The KRZS-8000A takes 0.12–0.2 mm nickel-plated steel for flat welding and 0.1–0.15 mm nickel-plated steel for projection welding. Pure nickel appears only on the single-sided model, so name your strip alloy when you ask for a quote on the double-sided unit.

The single-sided model lists 550 mm X and 380 mm Y travel with 0.04 mm displacement precision. The double-sided model lists 260 mm Z and 550 mm Y with 0.05 mm precision. Send your full PACK drawing and approve the axes, fixture envelope and both welding faces on the general arrangement drawing. The photos show stand-alone stations; automatic upstream loading or a full PACK line is a separate scope item.

BUYER NOTES

Polarity switching, tip force and power rows

The KRZD-8000A switches between positive and negative current in 10–50 ms with two to four schedules. The KRZS-8000A page states that switching is not available. Ask Courage what that switching does electrically and which schedule your strip and cell terminal need. The figure 8000A is part of the model name; request the calibrated weld-current rating of the supply you will receive.

Both models give spring pressure as 1–5 kg. Ask for the force unit, how it is measured and the tip design. The power rows disagree with each other: each model lists below 1000 W and then a consumption of 1500 W for the single-sided unit or 2000 W for the double-sided unit. The pages also give a 380 V three-phase welding supply and a 220 V input for the station. Request one signed utility schedule that states the total site load.

BUYER NOTES

Cycle times, rates and the weld trial

For the single-sided model the catalogue gives flat welding at 0.7–1.2 seconds and 1500–1900 pieces/hour, and projection welding at 1.1–1.5 seconds and 1000–1400 pieces/hour. For the double-sided model it gives flat welding at 0.9–1 second with a rate printed as 3000–3000 pieces/hour, and projection welding at 1.2–1.5 seconds and 2000–2300 pieces/hour. Ask Courage what one piece means, the conditions for each rate, and the correct double-sided flat rate.

Trial your own strip, terminal, coating and fixture. Agree limits for weld strength, joint resistance, spatter, cell temperature and tip maintenance. Run the trial with loading, repositioning, rejects and inspection included. The single-sided station measures 1050 ×900 ×1870 mm and weighs 380 kg; the double-sided station measures 1500 ×900 ×1900 mm and weighs 400 kg. Confirm guarding, service access, power and air for your installation.

Courage's profile lists the sorter and pad applicator that prepare cells for these welders, and joint resistance can be checked with the four-terminal method described on the cell measurement page.

The insulation pads applied before welding come from a machine such as the Courage KRZ-B10.

Questions that change the purchase

DecisionWhat the catalogue saysNext step
Which side access and strip match the joint? The single-sided model takes thicker strip and pure nickel; the double-sided model lists nickel-plated steel only.Send your PACK fixture drawing and a sample strip stack for approval.
Is current switching required? The KRZD-8000A switches polarity in 10–50 ms; the KRZS-8000A page says switching is not available.Specify the weld schedule you need and see it run on the selected supply.
What is the actual utility and output basis? The power rows conflict and the pieces/hour figures have no stated basis.Get signed electrical data and run a full-cycle trial counting good joints.

Still to confirm

  • One power and air schedule that settles the conflicting supply and consumption rows.
  • The tip force unit and the correct double-sided flat-welding rate.
  • The calibrated weld-current rating of the supply delivered with your model.
  • Weld strength, joint resistance and good-pack output on your strip and cells.
